Monterrey Airport to the City: Transport and Getting Around

Monterrey International Airport (code MTY) sits in Apodaca, on the eastern side of the metro area. It is the main gateway to northeastern Mexico and is reasonably well connected to the rest of the city. Here are your options on landing, and for getting around afterward.

Leaving the Airport

Authorized Taxi

The traditional option and the simplest: counters are inside the terminal, you pay before boarding, and you leave with a fixed fare. No negotiation, no surprises.

It is usually more expensive than a rideshare, but it has a real advantage if you land at night, do not have mobile data yet, or are traveling with a lot of luggage: you depend on nothing else.

Basic rule: book only at the official counters inside the terminal. Ignore anyone offering you a ride on the curb.

Rideshare Apps

Uber and DiDi both operate widely across the Monterrey metro area, and generally cost less than an airport taxi.

Two things to keep in mind:

• Airport pickup points change over time. The app tells you where to wait in the moment — follow that, not something you read a year ago.
• You need connectivity. Without roaming or a local SIM, airport WiFi is usually enough to request the ride, but have the plan settled before you land.

Rental Car

Counters are at the airport. It makes sense if:

• You plan trips outside the city (Santiago, García, Chipinque, La Huasteca).
• You are staying somewhere with free parking, which removes the daily cost that makes renting expensive in many cities.
• You will be moving between municipalities in the metro area a lot.

It makes less sense if your trip centers on downtown and a couple of fixed points, where rideshare beats rental plus fuel plus parking.

Getting Around the City

Uber vs. DiDi

Both work well in Monterrey. In practice:

• Coverage: both cover the metro area.
• Price: DiDi tends to run somewhat cheaper; Uber sometimes has shorter waits. Worth having both installed and comparing in the moment.
• Payment: both accept cards, and in many cases cash.

Having both apps and picking per trip is the obvious strategy, and it works.

Monterrey Metro

The metro is inexpensive and efficient along the corridors it serves, with several lines crossing the metro area. It works well for trips along those axes, including points downtown.

Honest limitations: it does not reach every attraction, and it has a closing time — which matters if you are leaving a late-finishing concert or match. Most visitors combine it with rideshare.

Driving Yourself

Monterrey is a car city: wide avenues, ring roads and metro-scale distances. Driving is comfortable outside rush hour, and rush hour is genuinely heavy.

Staying on the eastern side — Guadalupe, for example — gives you quick access to the main arteries toward downtown, toward the airport and toward the events district, which simplifies daily movement considerably.

A Recommendation by Trip Type

Short trip, all downtown: rideshare. Do not rent a car.

Concert or match: rideshare to get there, and lodging nearby for the trip back — that is where the difference is most obvious.

Trip with mountain excursions: rent a car, and look for lodging with free parking.

Very early or very late flight: authorized taxi, or a rideshare booked in advance; and if you can, stay on the eastern side, which is where the airport is.

Before You Land

Settle three things and the rest flows: how you will have mobile data, which transport option you will use leaving the terminal, and how you will get into your lodging if you arrive off-hours. That last one is the most underestimated — self check-in solves it entirely.
