El Potrero Chico from Monterrey: Climbing, Hiking and When to Go
Just outside Monterrey, in the municipality of Hidalgo, Nuevo León, there is a canyon of limestone walls that locals know as a weekend outing and climbers around the world know by name: El Potrero Chico. It is one of the best-known sport climbing destinations in the Americas, with long multi-pitch routes on grey rock that rises close to vertical.
If you climb, it is probably already on your list. If you do not, it is still worth the trip for the scenery. This guide covers both.
What it is and why it is famous
El Potrero Chico is a canyon cut through limestone ridges northwest of Monterrey. It made its name with long multi-pitch sport routes — climbs that go up hundreds of metres in stages — plus hundreds of single-pitch routes across grades.
That mix, together with mild winters, turned it into a gathering point for climbers from the US, Canada, Europe and beyond, many of whom spend whole seasons there.
When to go
- Autumn to spring: climbing season. Temperatures drop and the rock is climbable for much of the day.
- Summer: very hot. Sun-exposed rock becomes punishing; if you go, plan very early starts or a short walk.
If you climb
- Bring your gear or rent locally. There are climber-oriented businesses around the canyon; what is on offer changes, so confirm before you travel.
- Use an up-to-date route guide to pick lines that match your level.
- The long routes demand multi-pitch experience, rope management and descents. If you do not have that experience, hire a certified guide.
- Start early. Even in season, some walls get strong midday sun.
If you do not climb
El Potrero Chico is still a great outing:
- Walk the access road into the canyon with the walls rising on both sides.
- Take a trail up to a natural lookout over the canyon.
- Watch the climbers — in season, you will usually spot parties on the walls.
Wear shoes with good grip and bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat. Much of the walk has no shade.
Getting there from Monterrey
The simplest option is by car: the canyon sits northwest of the metro area and makes an easy day trip by road. A good three-day plan for climbers passing through or curious travellers:
- Day 1: Monterrey — downtown, the Macroplaza, dinner in the Barrio Antiguo.
- Day 2: early start for El Potrero Chico, climbing or hiking, back in the afternoon.

Safety and respect
- Do not climb beyond your experience, and never attempt long routes without an experienced partner.
- Respect private land and access points around the canyon.
- Pack out your trash. The climbing community here is known for looking after the place.
